Eliminating the Unconscious Bias in Hiring

The Voice of Job Seekers - Unemployed, Underemployed, Unappreciated Job Seekers Welcomed!

I was fascinated by articles discussing the Blendoor app. It was developed and founded by Stephanie Lampkin was able to get venture capital funding for it. The Blendoor app is a blind recruiting tool  eliminating features used to screen candidates from “unconscious bias.” I consider this a game changer especially if it minimizes or eliminates discrimination.

Let me now what you think about the Blendoor app’s possibilities. Here’s how you can comment:

  1. Call and leave a voicemail at 708-365-9822, or text your comments to the same number

Disabilities and Pay Equity

The Voice of Job Seekers - Unemployed, Underemployed, Unappreciated Job Seekers Welcomed!

The more disability rights, and gender and race pay disparities are discussed, the better it is for all. Job seekers who are affected can achieve fair chances and equity to manage the full  arc of his or her career. Tom Spiggle, founder of Spiggle Law, focuses in on discrimination. He is my guest for the show today.

I will be doing even more show regarding these issues. I would love to hear your concerns and questions regarding disability or pay equity. Here are three ways we can have further discussion on these issues:

The Elements of Good Writing for Your Career and Personal Brand

The Voice of Job Seekers - Unemployed, Underemployed, Unappreciated Job Seekers Welcomed!

Some career organizations are celebrating, “ International Update Your Resume Month!” Since resumes are one of many documents needed for your career success, I thought this was a good time for a show on grammar. Emails, business letters of kinds, and social media updates require good grammar.

Today’s guest is Susan Rooks, aka “The Grammar Goddess.” Susan has taught business writing in many countries including the United States and on many other subjects. Susan executes a straight-forward approach to teaching and training others on grammar. She will also tell you she does not know every English grammar rule in existence.

How do you feel about the importance of grammar? Let me know what you think:

Preparing Youth to be Job Ready

I’ve been wanting to do a show to prepare young people to be job ready for a while now. It is critical that teens learn the processes and skills to get a job. Youth unemployment last year increased to more than 20 million as the skill gap becomes more defined. The New Job Search!

The Voice of Job Seekers - Unemployed, Underemployed, Unappreciated Job Seekers Welcomed!

Both Hannah and I agree today’s job search is much more than writing and obsessively tweaking your resume. The new job search is about disruption and agility in finding social platforms to stand out. I have had Hannah Morgan on the show twice, but we talk periodically via email. She was my guest on episode 23 and episode 57.

During a recent email conversation, she asked me to be on her Blab show. I gladly accepted her invite to talk about what’s new in the job search.

Let me know if you are using some of the new platforms such as Blab, Periscope, or Snapchat. You can let me know in one of three ways:

Graduates, the Skills Gap is Real

The Voice of Job Seekers - Unemployed, Underemployed, Unappreciated Job Seekers Welcomed!

We have been hearing about the skills gap for a long time and studies in the past address the lack of what employers want. Payscale released a skill gap study detailing the disconnect between managers and recent graduates regarding their preparedness for employment after entering the workforce, and which skills managers are most likely to consider absent or deficient. Please go to Payscale’s website to view and download their report!

I discussed this two months ago with Rich Thompson, Adecco North America Chief Human Resource Officer. He also said one of the biggest challenges employers have is the skills gap. It is evident according to the study and organizations; graduates are not ready to present themselves as proficient in business oral and written communication. Lydia Frank from Payscale is with me to discuss their skills gap study specifically as it relates to college grads.

Have you been turned down for a position because you lacked skills? Talk to us. Here's how you can participate in the discussion:

  1. Call and leave a voicemail at 708-365-9822, or text your thoughts to the same number

Parents and their Job Ready College Student

Parents must participate in helping their son/daughter to be job-ready upon graduation. Millennials made up about 30 percent of the United States’ unemployment population.  Despite being college-educated, many recent graduates are ill-prepared for the workforce, leaving parents wondering how to get their kids from backpack to briefcase. Bill Holland is working with parents to have critical career conversations to help their son/daughter prepare to be job-ready.

Are you having career conversations with your college student?

As usual, your feedback is essential for this discussion.

Recorded shortly after the July 2005 launch of the first edition of The Elements of Resume Style (AMACOM, New York, NY), the freshness and continuing relevance of this podcast today help demonstrate: the more things change, the more they stay the same. As discussed in the second edition of the book, launched September 2014, successful candidates will discern between the rapid, plentiful changes in content delivery systems and the surprisingly fixed and enduring rules for developing error-free, clear, focused, targeted and compelling content. Transgendered Employees and Company Culture

Among the people who have disengaged themselves from the job search, I have decided to talk about the differently-abled who wait very late in life to find jobs. Dylan Rafaty, founder of DylanListed, LLC (DylanListed.com) and I engaged in a lengthy conversation with so much value, I consider this a special episode and one of the most important.

I am also asking you share this with someone with physical or non-visible disabilities, or a family member. I would love to hear your stories about your experiences with companies that hire and promote differently-abled people. Here’s how:

Social proof and personal branding is at the center of attracting the eyes of employers. This conversation is essential in providing clarity in where you need to start or pivot.

Let me know how your personal branding is being shaped? Here’s how:

  1. Call and leave a voicemail or text me at 708-365-9822
  2. Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com, press the “Send Voicemail” button on the right side of your screen and leave a message
  3. Send email feedback to mark@thevoiceofjobseekers.com

Mark is the CEO of YouTern, President of Switch and Shift, and co-author of A World Gone Social. This is our third recorded conversation and it’s always a template to further understand how to stand out to employers and recruiters.

The Voice of Job Seekers - Unemployed, Underemployed, Unappreciated Job Seekers Welcomed!

1. The rough road
You are not finishing anything completely to anyone’s satisfaction. You read advice but rarely follow through completely. Then you go to someone who you respect saying you have tried everything. Your resume, cover letter, and other necessary marketing materials are done, but what about your social profiles, LinkedIn profile, or other efforts completing your branding? Why are they incomplete? LinkedIn picture? Other profiles incomplete? How about your networking efforts? Are you having great conversations? You get the point. You know what happens when you go down a road needing paving? Your car gets damaged in more ways than one. The same will happen in your job search when it’s incomplete.

2. The long unwinding road

Did you know your references can sabotage your job search efforts? Are you sure that the people you have listed as references can speak to your competencies? You must know there are areas that your references can speak in your favor. Do you know what they will say? A few months ago, a client got the interview, completed the entire process until her reference check process didn't pan out. The interviewer knew (or, at least, had familiarity) with her boss, and asked about her. Her boss replied, “She can’t be trusted!” Of course, my client was devastated but understand this could go on if you are not sure what your references will say. If they can’t speak positively, it will be viewed negatively. Know what your references will say and avoid this road that will never end.
