Going into vacation mode, I wanted to offer some job search advice in what you can do in a pinch. Employers seem to ignore you lately. No call backs from employers, network contacts, or even seeing leads from anywhere.

Your job search  is in "code blue."

"Code blue" is a term used in hospitals when a patient is in distress. The heart has stopped. Resuscitation methods are in place. The team of residents, doctors, nurses et al deployed. This is critical, as it needs to be with your job search, and action is essential.

What do you do during when your job search lacks a heartbeat? When nothing is happening, how do you respond? I'd love to know what your thoughts and how you handle a lack of responsiveness from your efforts. Here's how you can let me know:

  • Call and leave a voicemail at 708-365-9822, or text your comments to the same number
  • Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com, press the “Send Voicemail” button on the right side of your screen and leave a message
  • Send email feedback to mark@thevoiceofjobseekers.com

Finally, I read a career book with the mission to entertain while making serious points. Much of what NOT to do in your job search and workplace is in the boo, B.S. Incorporated. The authors, Jennifer Rock and Michael Voss mix parody and non-fiction to bring us chaos.

I would love to know some of your worse work experiences. Here are three ways to join in on the conversation:

  • Call and leave a voicemail at 708-365-9822, or text your comments to the same number
  • Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com, press the “Send Voicemail” button on the right side of your screen and leave a message

As we dive deeper into the gig economy, each job seeker will accept several roles. Our roles as contractors and entrepreneurs, we must embrace our roles as negotiators. We will need to remain in negotiating mode for the longevity of our careers. To help us embrace this role, Kwame Christian, an attorney will help. He is the host of the American Negotiation Institute and negotiation expert.

If you find negotiating hard, don't worry, I got you. Feel free to share your negotiating story. You can also share your thoughts about this episode in one of three ways:

Today's job search requires you to keep both hands on the wheel. Any passive approach to finding opportunities fails. It doesn't work. You must remain engaged throughout your career or face significant challenges shifting gears.

My friend Hannah Morgan, is back to talk what is not working in your job search. We discuss her article from last fall and recently on her blog and solutions to help your job search efforts.

I would love to hear your thoughts in one of three ways:

  1. Call and leave a voicemail at 708-365-9822, or text your comments to the same number
  2. Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com, press the “Send Voicemail” button on the right side of your screen and leave a message
  3. Send email feedback to mark@thevoiceofjobseekers.com

Try different strategies to achieve different results. The same old strategies yield the same results. Most job seekers would rather do what is easy than what is challenging. It's easier to applying to 100 job board announcements in a month.  It's harder to have 15-20 meaningful person-to-person conversations in a month's time.

I would love to hear your thoughts in one of three ways:

  1. Call and leave a voicemail at 708-365-9822, or text your comments to the same number

Facing Unconscious Bias in Your Career and Life

For a long time, I have wanted Tony Chatman to come on my show. We have talked about many ideas over the last two years, but finally, a topic both of us are passionate about made it easy to start finalizing.

This was recorded live in front of an audience of three as well as a Facebook Live stream (more people engaged the conversation via Facebook). I would like to thank the First Christian Church of Chicago along with the Greater Ashburn Community Development Corporation for hosting us. Hundreds saw the event during and after the video was posted on Facebook. I also published it on my YouTube page.

We would love your input. Here's how you can contribute to the conversation:

  • Call and leave a voicemail at 708-365-9822, or text your comments to the same number
  • Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com, press “Send Voicemail” button on the right side of your screen
  • Send email feedback to mark@thevoiceofjobseekers.com

Once again, Janine Truitt of talentthinkinnovations.com and Chris Fields of ResumeCrusade.com joins me for a roundtable discussion. We banter about a trend where many are getting more degrees than what's valued by employers.

We would love your thoughts on the topic. Here are three ways you can participate in the discussion:

  1. Call and leave a voicemail at 708-365-9822, or text your comments to the same number

Unconscious Bias: Your Career and Workplace

Last week, I traveled to the University of North Georgia to present a talk about "Unconscious Bias."  I recorded it so I can share it with you at least a part of it. I talk about how it affects everyone in their career, life, and workplace.

This is an important topic to me as it affects the job search. In the end, I hope we can create amicable and responsive dialogue to take out bias in the job search process.

As always, I invite you to join the conversation. Here are three ways you can do so:

  1. Call and leave a voicemail at 708-365-9822, or text your comments to the same number
  2. Go to TheVoiceofJobSeekers.com, press “Send Voicemail” button on the right side of your screen.
  3. Send email feedback to mark@thevoiceofjobseekers.com
